I also wanted to stick with grip, but not rely upon jaunty .deb packages. Instead, I took the path of compiling grip from the latest source, from within karmic.

I have a brief post on the ubuntuforums on the topic, that shows the step-by-step as well as provides a shell script to perform the work automatically.

I looked at ripit, but I like to review the titles and make corrections before rip so I don't have to edit the tags afterward.
This post was just what I needed. It led me to look around a bit. I installed RipperX and took a quick look, but found that ripit is the solution I was looking for. I just edited /etc/ripit/config to my liking and now I just pop into a terminal and type ripit and away it goes!
Reply | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('6634','David','This post was just what I needed.
Grip is still the most flexible so I used the Jaunty packages mentioned by dwasifar. Needed libkrb53 from Jaunty too.
By the way - if you want to rip and encode two CDs in one go with Grip, have two desktop icons, each launching grip with slightly different parameters:
grip --device=/dev/sr0
grip --device=/dev/sr1
You can't configure grip to do this as it uses one config file.
Doing this has helped speed up encoding of my collection.
Reply | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('5752','Paul','Grip is still the most flexible so I used the Jaunty packages mentioned by dwasifar.
@Max
One thing that always bugged me in Grip was that the encoding progress indicator was way off when using VBR compression, and both progress indicators just plain didn't work when I moved to 64-bit. I kept hoping there'd be an update that'd fix it, but there never was.

Here's a link to the Jaunty .deb if you want: http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/gnome/grip
Reply | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('5724','dwasifar','@Max <\/a> \r\nOne thing that always bugged me in Grip was that the encoding progress indicator was way off when using VBR compression, and both progress indicators just plain didn\'t work when I moved to 64-bit.
Thanks for this information. I also wanted to install GRIP in Karmic. I've been using only GRIP since around 2002 or so and I want it back to Ubuntu. It is so annoying to find out "odd" changes in the new system. GRIP is a mature application, with all the needed functions, so, why it has to be updated? To fix bugs or secure holes I agree, but since there are (im guessing) so few in GRIP, why then exclude it from Karmic?
Reply | <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('5720','Max','Thanks for this information.
